Jokes in Italian as a foreign language: comprehension, funniness, and sharing

This paper analyses whether the comprehension of a joke in Italian as foreign language is influenced by personal or task elements, influences perception funniness, and perceived funniness affects intention to share jokes. A quantitative cross-sectional study was performed. Participants were all native Spanish speakers from Mexico who also read language. There 61 participants, aged 19-64 years (Mage = 26.3; SD 9.4), comprising 42 females 19 males. Comprehension measured using multiple-choice test. Funniness scale sharing determining share. The objectives fourfold: identify factors related test-taker (gender, occupation, age) comprehension; investigate test (level language, reading support, prior knowledge) explore if funniness; determine To statistically evaluate these question, four generalized linear models constructed (one corresponding each objective). results indicated that: (i) test-taker’s occupation (p 0.0499); (ii) interaction test-task 0.03087); (iii) <0.001); (iv) <0.001). Finally, discussion presented.
